Enneagram: A Guide to Understanding Personality Types

The Enneagram is a personality indicator that identifies nine distinct types, each characterised by unique patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior. he Enneagram of Personality Types is a modern synthesis of a number of ancient wisdom traditions, but the person who originally put the system together was Oscar Ichazo. The Enneagram assesses individuals based on their core motivations, fears, and strengths, and maps these types onto a nine-pointed diagram to illustrate how they relate to one another. Understanding your Enneagram type can provide valuable insights into your own personality and how you interact with others. By identifying your Enneagram type, you can gain greater self-awareness and improve communication and relationships both in personal and professional settings.

The Enneagram system is based on the idea that each type is driven by a core motivation or fear. These motivations and fears are what shape our behaviors and responses to the world around us. For example, someone who is a Type One might be motivated by a desire to be perfect, while someone who is a Type Four might be motivated by a fear of being ordinary. Understanding the nine Enneagram types can be a helpful way to gain insight into your own personality and the personalities of those around you. Here is a brief overview of each type:

Type One: The Perfectionist. Ones are motivated by a desire to be perfect and are often self-critical. They are reliable and responsible, but can also be rigid and judgmental.

Type Two: The Helper. Twos are motivated by a desire to help others and be loved. They are caring and nurturing, but can also be codependent and neglect their own needs.

Type Three: The Achiever. Threes are motivated by a desire to be successful and admired. They are hardworking and goal-oriented, but can also be image-conscious and competitive.

Type Four: The Individualist. Fours are motivated by a desire to be unique and special. They are creative and introspective, but can also be moody and self-absorbed.

Type Five: The Investigator. Fives are motivated by a desire to understand the world around them. They are curious and analytical, but can also be withdrawn and detached.

Type Six: The Loyalist. Sixes are motivated by a fear of being without support or guidance. They are loyal and dependable, but can also be anxious and indecisive.

Type Seven: The Enthusiast. Sevens are motivated by a desire for adventure and new experiences. They are optimistic and fun-loving, but can also be impulsive and avoid negative emotions.

Type Eight: The Challenger. Eights are motivated by a desire for control and power. They are strong-willed and assertive, but can also be confrontational and insensitive.

Type Nine: The Peacemaker. Nines are motivated by a desire for peace and harmony. They are easy-going and empathetic, but can also be passive and avoid conflict.

By understanding the core motivations and fears of each Enneagram type, we can gain insight into the behaviours and responses of ourselves and others.
