Legal Education in India Version 3.0

#Law, #Ethics & #Governance form a vital trifecta of good order and development for a globally resurgent India. Having celebrated #AzadiKaAmritMahotsav #BharatVarsh is marching on to an era of India@100 declared as the #AmritKaal A key driver that fuels this forward surge is education, knowledge and inspiration to the largest national resource capital, the Generation-Z & Generation-Alpha entering the work place and into the portals of Higher Education, including study of Law.


Many would have missed a milestone placing moment in Indian Legal Education that occurred on December 3rd, 2022 at Upasnagar in South Goa. The India International University of Legal Education and Research was formally inaugurated on June 9th, 2022 as a collaborative effort between State of Goa and the Bar Council f India Trust (Pearl First). The event saw presence of the Chief Minister of Goa, Dr Pramod Sawant, Honourable Justice of Supreme Court, Justice BR Gavai, Chairman of Bar Council of India, Adv Manan Kumar Mishra.

An eagerly anticipated moment arrived on December 3rd, 2022 when 37 students across BALLB, BBALLB and LLM of Academic Year 2022-23 gathered in the sprawling auditorium of IIULER at the interim campus. This was the erstwhile Goa Kala Bhawan gifted to the new venture. On the day of the inaugural Academic Session the forenoon saw distinguished luminaries from the Bar, the Legal Industry and Academia share their thoughts on Legal Education and Globalisation. A common refrain was that the moment of legacy was in the making. If 1986 saw Legal Education Version 2.0 with launch of NLSIU, Bangalore, this was the start of Legal Education Version 3.0 at the launch of an India International Law University.


Honourable #ChiefJusticeofIndia Dr DY Chandrachud exhorted first batch 2022-23 to “Question Everything & Have a Spirit of Enquiry!”Relish his inspirational talk at https://go.johnsonodakkal.com/IUG-003 In a captivating 29 minute address the CJI struck a chord in the young minds and managed to have many veterans wonder if they could restart their legal education in the path breaking initiative on launch.


The dynamic Vice Chancellor, Prof (Dr) Srividhya Raghavan affirmed that #IIULER will reimagine #LegalEducation into a #GlobalPhenomenon. Adv Manan Kumar Mishra, the Chairman BCI was the proud recipient of all-round compliments during and after the inaugural.

The next four days unwrapped a multi-spectral canvas for the new entrants into legal education. Professor (Dr) Ranbir Singh, former VC of NLU, Delhi and Prof (Dr) R Venkat Rao, former VC of NLSIU, Bangalore together crossed generational bridges in a two day orientation to the young under graduates. Prof P Lakshmi, Dean of Law at Karnavati University, Ahmedabad mentored the students into the heart and approach in studying law. Young faculty & scholars from GNLU, Gandhinar, namely, Ms Dhanya, Ms Mrinalini Bannerjee, Ms Nandita Gugnani & Ms Ruchita Kaundal provided a multi-faceted induction covering writing, methods, communication and attitudes. This author had the honour to bring select aspects from the maritime domain to anchor the Law - Ethics - Governance triad as a practical understanding.
